Thank you very much for your recent e-mail regarding the Goldstone report.
The European Parliament recently held a vote on a motion regarding it, the
result of which was 335 votes in favour, 287 against and 43 abstentions.

I voted in favour of the motion, which called for respect for human rights
by all parties to the Gaza conflict, independent investigations of alleged
violations of human rights, a strong EU common position on the follow-up of
the Goldstone report and close monitoring of its implementing measures.

The report also says that the new EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs
Baroness Ashton, and EU government Foreign Affairs Ministers, should
publicly demand the implementation of the Report’s recommendations and
accountability for all violations of international law, including alleged
war crimes, and urge both sides to conduct investigations that meet
international standards of independence, impartiality, transparency,
promptness and effectiveness.

Parliament also welcomed the EU Council's call for an immediate, sustained
and unconditional opening of crossings along the Gaza-Israel frontier as the
blockade has further worsened the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

The 1.5 million people of Gaza are deprived of basic necessities such as
concrete to rebuild areas bombed by Israel, and are living with rolling
electricity blackouts and minimal produce to buy. As a member of both the
European Parliament delegations to Palestine and Israel, I am a campaigner
to end the collective punishment of the Palestinians trapped in Gaza.

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the Report by Justice Goldstone.

Paul Nuttall MEP has asked me to answer on his behalf.

UKIP is gravely concerned about the situation between the Israelis and the Palestinians and calls for governments on both sides to come to a diplomatic, but above all peaceful, solution to the ongoing political and humanitarian problems.

UKIP does not believe that the EU should interfere in this situation, as it will only exacerbate a tense situation. Unaccountable EU bureaucrats have no place in any negotiations; this should be led by elected politicians who represent the views of democratically elected Parliaments.

Negotiations should continue using the U.N. to try and resolve what is far from a straightforward political and cultural dispute.
